The Fireplace Renaissance
It wasn’t so long ago that the fireplace was truly the centre of the home. Providing heat and hot water on long, cold winter nights it was the life-blood of the household and a status symbol for the wealthy who enjoyed a fire in every room.
As time moved on fireplaces were blocked up and central heating installed, and the traditional hearth was all but forgotten. How times have changed! Original features are now highly prized in period properties and modern design skillfully blends the old with new, introducing traditional elements with a contemporary twist in modern homes.
So whether you own a traditional property that you’d like to restore to its former glory, or you’re in a new build that could do with an injection of character and charm, your complete guide to brick tiling your fireplace is here!
Make a Statement – Brick Tiling your Fireplace
Almost any style of fireplace can be created with our industry leading products. From cosy country cottage to cutting edge design, brick tiling your fireplace is the perfect way to create a stunning focal point which will also compliment and enhance the rest of the space.
Traditional vs Contemporary
Traditional red brick and red clay brick slips are always a popular choice for brick tiling your fireplace. Red brick offers an authentic look for Victorian properties and is perfectly at home in a traditional setting.
Another of our most popular products for brick tiling your fireplace is our Olde Bayswater Blend slip.
These, along with the other tumbled and weathered products like Olde Watermill and London Weathered Yellow, are ideal for use in renovation projects where a blend of classic materials against modern fittings and décor work so well together.
Alternatively, brick tiling your fireplace with monochrome colours like our Manhattan, Monsoon or Silver Grey would be perfect for a more sleek and contemporary feature fireplace.
Do Brick Slips Look Real?
Absolutely! All of our brick slips are cut from real bricks and are indistinguishable from the real thing once installed.
The key to a convincing installation is to use our corner brick slips. When corner brick slips are used the result is as believable as a real brick built fireplace.
Installation Tips
Brick tiling your fireplace is no more complicated than any other tiling job but there are some specifics to bear in mind.
Firstly, our brick slips are not recommended for use in open fires. You will need to leave at least 4 inches or 100mm between the brick slips and any heat source to allow for ventilation, cooling and substrate protection.
Secondly, all joints should be pointed with fire cement. We would not recommend leaving the joints un-pointed on any brick slip installation but this is especially important with a fireplace. An un-pointed joint would allow heat to penetrate through to the substrate and potentially weaken it.
Once installed the whole structure should be pointed with fire cement to ensure that the installation is safe and that the walls are fully protected.
Finally, and as mentioned above, corner slips make all the difference when it comes to creating an authentic brick slip fireplace.
A little extra cost here will make a huge difference to the quality and overall appearance of the installation.
