This is our first Ask Andy of 2021, this months top questions are featured below, starting with an easy one. Are brick slips fire proof? Enjoy.
I am thinking of using your products in a fireplace are brick slips fire proof?
Naturally fired clay and brick is inert. So essentially to answer the question, are brick slips fire proof? the answer is a big YES!
These fact that they are made from clay alone means that real clay brick slips are going to be fireproof to a certain extent. As with any product heat has an effect over time and can cause pressures and stress on the material which can lead to structural failure. Although your brick slips will never set on fire, their will be a point in which they fail.
So brick slips can be used in a fireplace?
They most certainly can. When installed correctly, brick slips make the perfect feature in a fireplace. Brick slips fire proof by design are made from real clay are fired at extremely high temperatures, and are able to withstand the heat generated by most log burner and gas fires. It is recommended that a minimum 100mm clearance is kept between the brick slip surface and the heat source. It is also recommended that all joints are pointed with a fire cement. This will stop high temperatures from penetrating the brick joint.
Will your brick slips fade in colour?
Brick slips cut from fired clay so the product will not fade. when you first get your brick slips they will be slightly darker due to the moisture content. Once this has been fully dried the colour lightens slightly to the brick slips actual colour.
If using externally then over time the colour of the brick slip can change, this is more likely due to atmospheric conditions and weathering. Soot, ash and dirt can all affect the colour of brick but can always be removed with a cleaner.
How many brick slips will I get in a box?
Standard 65mm Brick slips come in boxes of 30, this quantity has a coverage of half a square meter. All of our standard slips come in half a square meter boxes. Corners, Headers and stretcher reveals are all purchasable individually.

Hi I really want to use brick slips in my kitchen diner but am struggling to find a suitable wall. If I wanted to use them as a splashback and then continue it round onto an adjoining wall over base units but at the same depth (say 24inches high) and have no wall units to butt up to – how would I finish off the edging where the brick stops and the plaster wall continues ? Thank you
Hello,
I have a house that was built in the 80s with an section of tiles hanging on the wall and I was wondering was is involved in replacing the tiles with brick slips, so that it matches the rest of the house.
I believe the tiles are hanging from battens on a timber frame.
Thanks
