Brick slip cuts and breakages explained. As with any decorative tiling product you are likely to get breakages.
This is not due to poor packaging or an inferior product but merely as a result of handling and transportation especially as brick slips and tiles are fragile products.
It has happened to many of us, we buy a pack of tiles from our local DIY store, check that they are all OK. Drive home and when we open them up there are 2 broken. It happens and is totally unavoidable.
Brick slips like tiles are prone to cracks and damage by vibration and handling, it is a fact and something which needs to be accounted for when buying.
Why do brick slips sometimes break?
Brick slips are not bricks, that are as hard wearing on the surface but as they are cut to a thin veneer they are delicate across the thickness of their body. Most of our products are between 14-20mm in thickness this means that the product has to be handled with care prior to installation.
We often get asked why all of our brick slip orders go on a more expensive pallet service. The answer is – To limit breakages.
Although it is possible to send our brick slips out on standard cheaper parcel services this is not practical. Due to the shear number of manual handling changes. Products almost always end up completely broken and unusable.
Our example would be similar to sending an egg out in an envelope – pretty much 100% guaranteed to break.
Order More than you need
As a general rule of thumb we would always suggest ordering a minimum of 5% extra to what you actually need. This 5% will allow wiggle room and take into account for breakages that may happen during handling and working. Doing this also saves money on extra delivery charges for additional products that may need to be ordered to complete your project.
Save Breakages for Cuts
If you are installing a brick slip feature wall then you will most certainly need to cut some products during installation. Our advice would be, if you do have a few broken slips then this is the perfect opportunity to use them up for cuts.
