Choosing the right bit!
Please do not reach into your toolbox and pull out any old drill bit. This is the first mistake which is made when drilling brick slips. You need to have the correct drill bit for the job before you start drilling.
Wood or metal bits will simply fail at the task and may cause your brick slips to break or crack.
To drill into brick slips we recommend using a masonry drill bit as they are specially designed to drill clay stone and masonry. A standard masonry bit will be fine but if you want an improved cut you could splash out and invest in the more professional diamond tipped or carbide masonry drill bits.
What do I need?
To install most shelves, fixtures and fittings you will need the following tools:
- An Electric or battery powered Drill ( min 18V)
- A masonry Drill Bit
- Pencil
- Spirit Level
How to Drill into brick slips correctly!
Once you have marked your hole locations using a pencil it is time to drill your holes. A quick note when marking would be to make sure your holes are within the bulk of the tile and not close to any edge. This will limit the chance of breaks and cracks.
When drilling brick slips we would recommend using a smaller bit first to create a pilot hole and then re drill the hole with the correct size bit for your fixing.
Drilling masonry is always better on a slower speed and take your time. Slow and steady wins the race and in this case saves on broken brick slips.
Time to put that shelf up!
Once your holes are drilled you can install your fixings as normal. Masonry fixings work perfectly with brick slips.
So long as your wall has been installed correctly and your substrate is structurally sound your shelves or fixtures will fix to the wall with ease.
