Scottish Life House – Newcastle, UK
Why look old when you can look new!
It is fair to say that architecture in Britain has had its ups and downs over the last century. Although as with any art-form architecture is always going to be the subject of opinion.
The Brutalist movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s saw the landscape of Britain’s working towns and cities transform into cold concrete jungles. Again that is subject to opinion and personal taste.
Since the end of the movement and the desire for towns and cities to appear more traditional and attractive, the solution has been to knock down or transform these old and dated buildings.
This case study focuses on the transformation of a typical Brutalist building using our brick slip cladding.
Project
Cladding a structure of this age and design is no easy feat.
The buildings facade and exterior formed part of the overall super structure, and being cast from concrete this will have posed significant difficulties in the early stages of the renovation project.
The whole works required knock outs and window expansions. Mechanical fixing methods and expertly cut bespoke brick slip cladding.
Brick slip cladding
The bricks required for this project were specially chosen by the client and were cut down to order under the clients specific instructions.
Every brick slip, brick slip corner and cut had to be quality checked and any products that were not up to the grade were rejected.
The brick slips on this project were all cut from quality selected real clay bricks. These brick slips were fixed using adhesive and mechanical fixing systems.
Ensuring that the project met commercial regulations.
Result
A great project which showcases the often unseen side to brick slips.
If you have walked round your local town or city and looked up at some of the new buildings. Assuming that they are built with bricks by traditional methods is a given.
This should not be the case. Modern technology, cutting and manufacturing techniques, coupled with speedy construction methods means that brick slip cladding is becoming the new norm.
Large scale project designers see the speed and onsite benefit to using real brick slip cladding.
Scottish Life House in Newcastle is just a great example of what is being achieved up and down the UK.
