As humans we are all very much connected to our sense of touch and feel. This is why texture plays an important role on how we perceive and process a space.

The easiest way to simplify texture when it comes to project design is to look at this element like a child. When we are children we have to touch everything, it is a very important way with which we interact with the world around us. Designers use texture in much the same way, using it to add comfort and mood.

Brick Slip Texture

When it comes to brick slip texture we really do have it all. Starting with the material, clay when fired has a solid dense texture. The great thing about bricks is that depending on the brick mould used you can achieve a whole range of different textures.

Most handmade and reclaimed brick slips tend to have a more rough undulated surface. This kind of surface works great in areas of low light as the surface has a larger area for light to be reflected. This kind of surface can be the most interesting to work with and reap the most amazing results.

The position of lighting also makes a big impact. The direction the lighting is applied to a surface can also influence the texture. An artificial light shining up a reclaimed brick wall casts more shadows making the wall seem even more textured.

Texture in Interior Design

For some reason, texture can often become an afterthought when it comes to interiors. The sensation caused by the external surface of an object such as brick slips is one that evokes emotion and attachment.

Texture works very much the same as colour. Rough textures are more likely to make a space feel intimate and grounded while smooth textures bring a sleeker more aloof tone to the room.

Putting a smooth texture or surface directly next to a rough one like real clay brick slips will more often than not make the rough surface of the brick stand out more. This partnering of polar textures gives them more weight and strengthens their use.

Bottom Line

If you are using brick cladding then planning your brick slip texture is a component that will surely help you elevate to the next level. Don’t be afraid of using rough brick slips in a sleek kitchen or smooth brick slips in a rustic lounge. Use texture to your advantage and create a brick feature wall fit for a magazine.

Texture is one of those design elements that is often difficult to get right.
