Olde Heritage Brick slips help to grab a Silver Merit Award
Introduction
As with all of our case studies it’s hard not to get caught up within the designer’s enthusiasm for what they have helped to create. Particular projects stand out and this one featuring the Olde Heritage brick slips is certainly one of them.
BBC Gardeners World is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and every year the BBC host the BBC Gardeners World Live at the NEC.
An event which brings together thousands of likeminded green fingered individuals in celebration of all things outdoors.
This year’s show has been extra special as we have been gifted with the inclusion of our Olde Heritage brick slips within one of the highlighted show gardens.
A showpiece for Artemis Landscapes and a successful design by Viv Seccombe, their garden titled “Living in Sync” deservingly won a prestigious Silver Merit at the private award ceremony.

Design
Whilst neighbouring show gardens opted to go for the standard array of modern vs. quirky back garden designs, Viv Seccombe and the team from Artemis Landscapes decided on an urban front garden to exhibit their talents.
Many of the UK’s front gardens are paved over for parking, the decision by the team was to design a garden that would demonstrate how a modern urban couple or family could have space and incorporate plants and wildlife, whilst incorporating stimulation and practicality.
As with any show or exhibition one of the fundamental requirements was that the project build be done over only a short period of time and like wise dismantled in very little time.
These requirements always have to be taken into account when penning a project of this scale.
To add a sense of realism and solidarity to the whole piece the designers chose to incorporate the use of brick cladding into the design by the addition of a full life size replica of a quintessential English town house facade.
The use of real clay brick slip cladding instead of a full brick structure has ultimately saved the team time and money without having to compromise of aesthetics.
Depth of Construction
Throughout the history of landscape design and architecture one of the most frequently used techniques for expressing the elegance of a design has been to emphasize lightness and space over solidarity.
The constructor’s success is in the detail, the inclusion of using the number 50 within the finishing touches of the door brings homage to the number of years BBC Gardeners world has been going.
The development of the bay window and the use of Olde Heritage brick slip corners within the edges and dentil work have provided a wonderful elegance allowing the house feature to be adopted by the garden before it rather than dominate the show garden.
Having spoken to Nick Green and his team on the events press day we were able to get an insight into this fantastic project.
Using brick slips has meant that Nick and his team were able to build and prepare pre fabricated sections of this stunning brick facade prior to the start of a show, applying finishing touches on site.
The team managed to bring life to the structural differences between the brick cladding of the back building and the raw timber woodland structures on the ground.
This was achieved by weaving and meandering a delicate array of wild and local flora, bringing a triumphant and refreshing balance to the whole exhibit.
Product
A firm favourite for set builders and TV Studios the Olde heritage brick slips were successfully placed for use within this fantastic show garden. A rich and subtle red clay which has all the wear of a 200 year old brick but none of the grime and dirt.
This brick slip owes its name to its ability to fit in with many period projects and ones that require a deep sense of history and antiquity.
Nick Green owner of Artemis Landscapes had the task of selecting the brick slip which would be used and we feel that that choice was on the money.
The team used a selection of Olde Heritage brick slips and Olde Heritage corner slips to recreate this town house facade.
A rapid set adhesive was used to stick the slips to the timber structure and then the whole project was pointed up after installation with a traditional pointing mortar.
Result
BBC Gardeners World Live is an opportunity for both the BBC and the exhibitors to showcase the best of their culture, industry and business achievements.
It is not so long ago that the thought of building a full front face of a house within a show or exhibition garden would have been laughed out of the design room.
But thanks to the availability and authenticity of the products we had on offer Artemis Landscapes were able to utilise our Olde Heritage brick slips and incorporate them with surgical exactness.
Never have we seen a project so full of life and illuminating, technically the design of “Living in Sync” may seem straight forward but as you can expect the execution and finalization of the whole garden has been in the reams ability to maximise on the smallest of details.
A soaring success and one of the most inspiring projects featuring our brick slips that we have ever seen.
A proud achievement and well done to all involved.
